The English word “education” comes from the Latin verb educare, and, as most dictionaries will tell us, is related to another Latin verb educere.

Education: bringing out another persons potential.
In ancient Greece, Socrates argued that education was about drawing out what was already within the student. The word education comes from the Latin e-ducere meaning "to lead out." “To draw up” and “to bring out” from this we can deduce that true Christ based education is drawing out the career and character potential of the candidate. When people saw a shepherd boy Samuel saw a king in David. Educating people is not like filling up blank sheets of paper or pouring knowledge into their buckets, their brains…it is bringing out what Christ has already placed within them according to Eph 2:10…that is why education without Jesus Christ produces clever devils.

At the same time and age that Socrates lived, the Sophists, a group of itinerant teachers, promised to give students the necessary knowledge and skills to gain positions with the city-state. Again true Christian education is not only to leave them with a certificate. Mature Christian educators’ disciple or mentor them into their role

in society. Real Christian educators are the wind beneath their wings…the worldly educational system provides us with success that is temporary but Joshua 1:8 provides us with good success that lasts.
